The Death of Durability

by Owen Sechrist

Has anyone else noticed that it is getting more and more difficult to find good quality durable products in our market place?     It is my belief that this is but one element of a consumer driven mentality that embraces low prices at the sacrifice of quality, durability and craftsmanship.  This is a very short sighted and penny-wise & pound-foolish mindset that is deeply affecting manufacturing and customer service industries such as home remodeling.     The biggest problem that I see with this is that companies who do still produce quality goods are being driven out of the market place due to reduced demand for their product.  Eventually those of us who would rather purchase fewer high quality goods are going to have very few options left, and because those items are no longer being produced in volume they will be exponentially less affordable.
